About
Portobelo
Nestled on the northern coast of Panama, Portobelo is a town rich in history and culture that offers stunning natural beauty, with pristine beaches and lush tropical surroundings. Founded in 1597, it quickly became an important port during the Spanish colonial era. Its strategic location made it a bustling center for trade and a target for pirates. Today, Portobelo is known for its impressive colonial fortifications, including the Castillo Santiago de la Gloria and the forts of San Jerónimo and San Felipe, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Portobelo’s vibrant culture is deeply influenced by its Afro-Panamanian heritage, especially during the annual Festival de Diablos y Congos, which draws travel enthusiasts from around the world. This lively event features traditional music, dance, and elaborate costumes, celebrating the town’s history and the resilience of its people. Visitors can explore the customs and enjoy the local cuisine, making Portobelo a must-visit destination for those seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Our first underwater gallery pays tribute to this unique cultural experience. The inaugural sculpture, La Reina Congo, highlights one of the festival’s most iconic figures, representing the strength and unity of the Congo people. Through MUSAP, we aim to raise awareness, protect the area, and foster positive changes in the local community.
